This is a big transition time and motivation isn't always the highest for a third grader in December. Continue checking planners every night, this helps your student stay on top of items. Ask your student, "What was your favorite subject to study today? Why?

Keep the conversations going, a lot of change happens in third grade academically, socially, and developmentally. Sometimes we need to come home and unload from our day, so will your third grader. If you have questions/concerns please don't hesitate to drop in or set up a time with me to meet. There will be a lot of new things popping up starting around this time of year.

Thank you for everything that you do, blessings on all God brings you to and through for this coming week.

Hello Third Grade Families,

Monday is our math test over 3 digit addition and 3 digit subtraction word problems. I sent home the practice test so that your student can practice some problems.

There will be no Spelling for this coming week, due to the short week. That also means only two devotions for this coming week as well, one for Monday and one for Tuesday.

When we come back from Thanksgiving break, we will have our President Reports on Friday, November 30th. Please help your student make sure he/she has the four or more paragraphs in paragraph form on the final draft paper. Also attached to the final draft should be the resources used with just the title/author and internet addresses. Then have your student double check that he/she feels ready to report with the poster board that was created to assist in telling us about the President that was studied. Your student will not be reading from the paragraphs that were written, those will be passed around the classroom.

It is always fun to hear the details that were gathered and retained presented from a third grader's perspective. I always look forward to the new things I will learn on President Report Day. As a reminder, there is no report for December, but we will have a book report at the end of January.

We had great conversations this week in third grade about gratitude. Our day tends to go better when our mind set is on seeing how blessed we are and how grateful we are for all those blessings God has given us. We kept a gratitude journal throughout the week and recorded the many intentional actions of other people towards us and others that help us feel grateful.

I am grateful for the many blessings in my life and included on that list is you, your student, and our school that we share. Thank you for everything that you do. Blessings on all God brings you to and through for this coming Thanksgiving week. Have a great week together!

Hello 3rd Grade Families,

One big event we have this coming week is The Veteran's Day Chapel. We hope that you can join us in the gym at 9:00am for our Veterans Day celebration. We are planning on wearing red, white, and blue in honor of our veterans who serve and have served for our freedom. Thank you to some of you from our classroom families that have served as well, we are very grateful.

Speaking of grateful, third grade is doing a gratitude challenge next week. Take a sneak peek at what we will be focusing on with this focus on the family article. We will be working on being intentional with our gratitude and how we can continue to instill this during our day to day lives.

Coming up as well on November 15th is the parent cooking class at Hyvee. Kristen our dietitian is pretty entertaining and I don't want you to miss out on a little taste of the many creative ideas she has for all ages on making healthy choices while we are rushing around from day to day. For more information and signing up, please click on the link below.
At the end of this coming week we are wrapping up our lesson on 3 digit addition and 3 digit subtraction with word problems in math. We will have a practice test on November 15th. This topic starts on page 55 in the math book, your student should focus on using pages 90-93 to help with studying. The test day will be Monday, November 19.

If your student hasn't handed in the permission slip for the Symphony with the three dollars to Mrs. Prouty, please help remind your student to give the paper to you to sign and bring it back by Monday. The Symphony is on Monday, November 19th at 9:15am. Then on Tuesday, November 20th at 2:15pm we are walking over to Hyvee for our cooking class. If you would like to join us, please let me know. We would love to have  you!

Thank you for everything you do and blessings on all God brings you to and through for this coming week.

Hello 3rd Grade Families,

It is official, the President Report assignment was handed out on Tuesday. Each student has an assigned president that is to be researched, written about, and presented on November 30th. Your student will need help deciphering words and organizing some information into paragraphs, but they are to do the majority of the project on their own. Collecting information, writing paragraphs, and presenting is something the class has been working on for awhile and I'm excited to see all the information the class discovers about the Presidents.

This coming week the Scholastic Book Fair is going to be taking the place of library. If your student has permission to bring money to school to purchase something from the Scholastic Book Fair, our day is on Tuesday afternoon. Otherwise a wish list will be made instead. It would be a good time to practice money skills, but the decision is between you and your student.

Roller skating for 3rd grade starts on Monday in P.E. The only thing your student needs to bring is a helmet. There are some here, but not enough for everyone. If you would like your student to leave the helmet at school for the month of November we can keep it in the classroom. Our P.E. days are on Monday and Wednesday if the helmet will be going back and forth.

Don't forget daylight savings time on Sunday, we fall back an hour. Thank you for everything that you do and blessings on all God brings you to and through for this coming week.

Hello 3rd Grade Families,

I always love seeing all of the creativity and excitement that goes into book reports, it is a great opportunity to see each student have their time to shine. They are all doing a wonderful job!

We have been working really hard in class on collecting facts and learning about how America and our government was developed. So, instead of doing book reports in November and December, we will be doing president reports. They will be presented on November 30th, then we won't have our next book report until the end of January. The information about the president report will be sent home on Tuesday this coming week.

In math we moved onto our next topic. Estimating is a difficult topic for third graders, it will not go away, but your student will see a little less rounding in the third grade future. This new topic will focus on different ways to add and subtract two, three, and four digit numbers. At times it will require regrouping/borrowing and renaming 10 ones as 1 ten or 10 tens as 1 hundred. We have been working on memorizing our addition facts in class every day by using rocket math. Here are some resources that could help your student at home for our new topic.

We would love to have you join us in November with the parent cooking class at Hyvee. There are 30 spots available for class on November 15th. For more information and signing up, please click on the link below.

Hello 3rd Grade Families,

This week your student is starting to work through adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers in math. It is sometimes necessary to regroup or borrow 10 ones as 1 ten, or rename 10 tens as 1 hundred. We focus on the old school way we were taught in school. For example when adding 124+189, you must regroup twice, carrying the extra ones over to the top of the tens and the extra tens to the top of the hundreds. Some good remembers for this class is bigger number on top, add the ones first, then the tens, then the hundreds, and making sure everything is lined up correctly.  It takes some practice to get this all down.

Here are some resources for extra help.

This coming week we have Hyvee cooking class on Tuesday. We will leave the classroom at 2:15, let me know if you would like to walk over with us so I don't leave you behind. Our Sanford MOOD talk will be on Thursday morning. We will also have 3rd grade school pictures on Thursday.

Book reports are right around the corner on October 26. Please double check that your student is reading a chapter book and hopefully getting close to the end.

Thank you for everything you do and blessings on all God brings you to and through for this coming week.
